This book is about a solution. The reality of racial strife in our society is obvious. If the recent Los Angeles riots taught us anything, it is that we have been traveling in circles. Riots, fermenting in the hotbed of racial inequity and poverty, lie dormant only to rise again; each time more vile and destructive…
We say that Christ is the answer. Let us be about applying His unique and specific answer: racial reconciliation…
Our personal stories lay the foundation and, we trust, underline the credibility of the book’s… eight principles, these principles have been refined in the crucible of inner-city living and ministry. Hardly scholarly, the eight principles are practical and biblically-based. At the conclusion of each chapter are practical applications that should help you be a reconciler in your personal life, work, church, and community. We hope it will encourage action- action to cross barriers of race and class in the name of Christ.
Raleigh Washington and Glen Kehrein co-authored Breaking Down Walls: A Model of Reconciliation in an Age of Racial Strife, the 1994 Gold Medallion winner of the Christian Booksellers Association. Both Glen Kehrein and Raleigh Washington are men deeply committed to the notion that reconciliation benefits everyone and is honoring unto God. Having been drummed out of the army because of envy and racism and later reinstated, Raleigh shares how God healed him of the anger that was a result. Showing ignorance and prejudice, Glen began an odyssey that ended with his living in the city and having a vision for inner-city ministry. The eventual linking of their lives and the founding of Rock of Our Salvation Church serves as a beautiful picture of how blacks and whites can work together.

This book is amazing and shockingly (unfortunately) still very timely and relevant with today’s current racial climate. The eight principles are very practical and can help anyone to feel equipped to navigate these topics. I highly recommend this book!
